The complete guide
Getting Started With AI in 2026: A Plain-English Guide for Service Businesses
You have been hearing about AI for three years. Nobody has told you what it does for a business like yours. This page fixes that.
Here is the problem with almost everything written about AI: it is written for people who already care about AI. You do not. You care about the job that got booked by someone else because your phone rang while you were under a sink.
So this guide never mentions how any of it works. It lists 24 jobs a business owner actually wants done, explains each one the way you would explain it to a mate in a pub, and tells you roughly what it costs.
Read the list. Find the one that describes your worst week. Start there.
How to pick where to start
Pick the thing that already costs you money
Not the most impressive one. The one where you can name the number you are losing. If you cannot name the number, that is not your starting point.
Start with one, not five
Everyone who buys five at once ends up using none of them. One thing, working properly, earns the right to the second.
Insist on seeing it work
Ask for a recording, a demo, a screen share. Anyone who cannot show you the thing running has not built it.
Give it four weeks
Nothing shows its value in a fortnight. Nothing needs longer than six weeks either.
The honest bit
Some of these will not suit you. A business taking five calls a week does not need anything answering its phone. A shop with no returns does not need returns handled. Anyone telling you every business needs all of it is selling, not advising.
What follows is the whole menu, grouped by the part of your week each one fixes.
